Veg Box News - 30th January - 2nd February, 2018

Slightly late with Veg Box News this week – apologies for that.
Reports from the veg ordering team are that stocks of interesting, good value UK-grown vegetables are running a little short now and we will be using more imports over the next few weeks. The largest impact is of course on the G 'UK only' boxes as options become very limited for a few weeks. If you are a G box customer you may need a good supply of recipes for root-based dishes... mashes, roasts soups and stews of course... Alternatively, you might like to consider switching to an A or a B for a few
weeks.

A

Potatoes – Kestrel 1.2kg
Carrots 600g
Onions 500g
Red Pepper
Kale
Celery
Beetroot

B's will get Leeks 600g in place of the Potatoes
D's will receive a further 800g Potatoes and a head of Broccoli
E's will receive the Leeks 600g and a Green Pepper
L's and M's will receive the above additions and a Squash

K

Apples – Gala 600g
Pears 400g
Orange 600g
Clementine 500g
Lemon
Grapefruit

Q's will also get some Bananas and Avocados 200g

At this time of the year Bananas are often very green when they arrive in the shop – we have set up a small, warm banana ripening area but are wary of sending hard green bananas out. If, as a K box customer, you really miss Bananas when they are not in the boxes then you might like to consider having an 'If Not In Box' type Standing Order as part of your delivery. Then we will bring you your specified amount of Bananas separately if they are absent from the box recipe.

Veg Box News 23rd - 26th January, 2018

As I have mentioned previously in Veg Box News, cold frosty weather is not conducive to the picking of vegetables in British fields so once again we are a little at the mercy of our suppliers as to whether the ordered veg actually arrives.  Likely lines to be affected are the Artichokes and Cabbage particularly.

A

Potatoes – DesirĂ©e (we hope) 1.2kg
Carrots 600g
Onions 500g
Jerusalem Artichokes 600g
Cabbage – Savoy or a Tundra
Fennel 400g
Butternut Squash

B’s will get Leeks 600g instead of Potatoes. They won’t get the fennel but will get a Red Pepper
D’s will get a further 800g Potatoes and a portion of Purple Sprouting Broccoli
E’s will get the Fennel Leeks and Red Pepper
L’s and M’s will get the above additions and also a Lettuce

K

Apples – Crimson Crisp 600g
Bananas 600g
Blood Oranges 600g
Pears – Conference 400g
A Grapefruit
A Lime

Q’s will also get a Mango.

Blood oranges are particularly tasty at the moment – it’s a good time of year for citrus generally – but they are not to everyone’s taste. The Navels are good too though so let us know if you want to have those instead.

For those with a sweet tooth, we still have (non-organic) Seville oranges… We’ll take great care to make sure we don’t put the Seville oranges in the fruit boxes by mistake, as happened once a few years ago!!  Lot of complaints that week - Oops!

Sprout tops
Sprout tops are delicious shredded and stir-fried, or lightly steamed
Tuesday/Wednesday - Swede
Thursday/Friday - Parsnips
Courgettes 400g
Leeks 600g
Garlic

B's will get Fennel instead of the potatoes
D's will get a further 800g Potatoes and some Sweet Potatoes
E's will get a Lettuce
L's and M's will get the above additions and a Squash

K
Apples - Russets 600g
Bananas 600g
Kiwis 500g
Oranges 600g
Clementines 500g
A Lemon

Q's will also get a Grapefruit and some Pears.

Interesting news from the shop floor...

We are always trying to consider the environmental impact of our business and with a view to cutting down on plastic packaging we switched to paper pulp punnets, last year, to use in the fruit and veg boxes.  Some things arrive in the shop already in plastic bags and it is unlikely that we would be able to stop plastic use altogether, but we are happy to have these bags back if you can't reuse or recycle them yourself.  We use the services of www.recyclingrevolution.com.  We are also in the process of sourcing larger, sturdier paper bags for use with the delivery side orders.

We are now offering the Ecoleaf Refill service in the shop.  We are of course very short of space in the shop so we have installed our large bulk containers down in the cellar but just bring your empty bottles in and the elves down there will magically refill them for you.

We'll be offering refills for Ecoleaf Washing up Liquid, Ecoleaf Laundry Liquid and Ecoleaf Fabric conditioner.  And of course the refills offer great reductions on buying the products off the shelf.

Veg Box News 10th - 13th July, 2018

We are delighted to be including so much local and UK-grown produce in the boxes this week although for some lines this does mean a slight...
